East Africa (Kenya)

About the East African Chapter

In the past, African Clinical Research Professionals have had to travel to Europe or America for certification or other professional development programs. Soon, certification courses will become more accessible to Research Professionals in the African region.

The East African Chapter of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals is due to be launched in Nairobi, Kenya on 14 May this year. It will be hosted by ACRP members in the region in conjunction with KEMRI/Walter Reed Program. This will be the second ACRP chapter in Africa, after the South African Chapter which was established in 2002.

It is hoped that the Chapter, through provision of relevant ACRP Certified courses, will help Clinical Research Professionals in the region to keep abreast with the constantly changing International Laws and Regulations regarding Clinical Research. Immediately after the launch of the chapter, and periodically afterwards, the following courses will be offered; GCP, Certification Exam Revision for Investigators , Certification Exam Revision for CRAs, and Certification Exam Revision for Clinical Research Coordinators.

Dr. Bernhards R. Ogutu, an experienced investigator and clinical trialist is leading the team of interim officials of the new chapter. It is hoped that the East African chapter will draw its membership not just from the East African region but also from other African countries where ACRP is not represented.

With the increasing amount of Clinical Research currently taking place in Africa, it is hoped that the East African Chapter activities will serve as a primary resource for clinical research professionals in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries, as well as those in hospital, academic medical centers, and physician office settings. This chapter will also be used to spur the development of chapters in other African countries. This should have a multiplying effect in providing professional development opportunities to investigators, study coordinators and monitors, project managers, QA/QC auditors, site managers, regulatory affairs professionals, data managers and others in the African region.
