Why Do EMR/CTMS Integration Benefits Remain Out of Reach?

It’s time to “take the mystery out” of how to integrate an electronic medical record (EMR) system with a clinical trial management system (CTMS), says Wes Fishburne, IBM Offering Manager for the IBM CTMS for Sites product line.

The benefits are big, Fishburne says. “If a site successfully integrates its EMR and CTMS, it will improve patient safety, billing compliance, and data accuracy,” he explains. Another bonus: “It also reduces duplicate data entry.”

After nearly 20 years in the trenches, Fishburne has observed that “everyone wants this,” but confusion and trepidation appear to be holding back integration. The antidote, he asserts, is to initiate a deep dive educational effort with the goal of helping users break down the value of EMR/CTMS components, then baking in proven tools and tactics regarding how those can be best implemented.

Industry wariness aside, Fishburne is bullish on the future of integration. “My prognosis is that integrations between these systems are readily available,” he says. “Sites just need to prioritize and implement” their plan.

Fishburne will be one of the presenters of “Unleashing the Value: How Integrating Your EMR and CTMS Can Become Reality” at ACRP 2018. He’s certain it will be a valuable and timely session to help educate clinical research professionals. “I’ll be surprised if a single hand is raised when we ask attendees who’s already accomplished this,” he says. “We’re going to give attendees a better understanding of the considerations and configurations” needed to design and implement an effective EMR/CTMS integration.
