'Find Your Element' Campaign Seeks to Grow & Diversify Clinical Trial Workforce

Campaign Adds New Markets and Aims to Increase the Diversity of the Clinical Research Workforce

The Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) today announced the expansion of its “Find Your Element” digital campaign to several new markets: Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and San Francisco. The expansion is designed to grow interest in and awareness of the clinical research profession among college students, including diverse and multicultural students to help make clinical trials more representative of the patient population. The vaccine and therapeutic clinical trials associated with COVID-19 demonstrate the need for more diversity in clinical trials and the clinical research profession.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black communities are more than twice as likely to die from the coronavirus as white communities. However, of the companies currently conducting clinical trials for a vaccine, very few have a large minority presence. Of the 25,000 participants in Moderna’s Phase 3 trial, only has 13% are Black, 27% Hispanic or Latino, and less than 5% American Indian while Pfizer’s 32,000 person trial is made up of only 8% Black participants, 12% Hispanic or Latino participants, and 0.6% Native American.

“Creating a more diverse clinical research pool starts with a more diverse clinical research workforce,” said Jim Kremidas, ACRP Executive Director. “The racial disparity in clinical trials is a major problem that is only getting worse. We have to address the need for more clinical research professionals to keep up with the growing number of trials and ensure those trials are more representative of all our communities.”

The “Find Your Element” campaign rolled out in January 2019 in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina and Miami with ads in English and Spanish. The campaign later expanded to Minneapolis/St. Paul, Boston and Houston with English and Spanish ads. To date the campaign has reached more than 22 million people and generated more than 131,000 visits to the ACRP website where students can learn about the clinical research profession.

The “Find Your Element” campaign is a major initiative of ACRP’s Partners in Workforce Advancement, With more than 20 drug and medical device, CROs, investigator sites, academic institutions and government agencies, the Partners in Workforce Advancement work to grow and expand the clinical research workforce and set and support standards for workforce competence.
