¡Si, se puede! Engaging Latines in Clinical Research

More and more in recent years, leaders of clinical trials and community engagement initiatives have focused on increasing the engagement of historically excluded communities.

Even though the Latinx/Hispanic community makes up around 20% of the population in the United States, representation in trials hardly reaches that percentage. Over the last decade, health inequity has steadily increased within the Latinx communities. These communities face unique obstacles to accessing healthcare, enrollment, and retention. This interactive webinar reflected on the need for culturally competent research and advocacy, the complexity of the Latinx identity, and the need to reflect on how we relate to the Latine identity. It provided tools to bridge the gap with Latinidades and created innovative community engagement strategies. Are we ready to make “nothing about us, without us,” solidarity, and community empowerment in clinical research a reality?

Upon completion of this continuing education program, participants should be able to:

  • Reflect on the complexity of the Latino/a/e/x identity, participants will learn that “Latino” encompasses various identities, so effective recruitment and retention plans must respond to this community’s diversity.
  • Examine the barriers to Latinx representation in clinical research, participants will learn about the myths and obstacles the Latinx communities face when engaging in clinical trials and how to work around them.
  • Learn from best practices and strategies for recruiting and retaining Latinx people in clinical research and community engagement, participants will gain a new perspective on creative and innovative community engagement approaches to recruiting and retaining Latinx people.
